Motorbike bursts into flame at gas pump, man arrested

A man in possession of a stolen motorcycle at a gas station in the 100 block of Salter Street was arrested by Winnipeg police Friday. While the man was pumping gas, the motorcycle unexpectedly caught fire. The man moved the burning bike away from the pumps toward a nearby dumpster.

Officers saw the fire and called for backup. The suspect ran off but was later found in a nearby taxi.

A 35-year-old Winnipegger was taken into custody. Police said they discovered various Percocet, Xanax, and Gabapentin pills, as well as a weapon, which he was prohibited from possessing under court orders.

The man was charged with multiple offences, including possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of a concealed weapon. He was also charged with failure to comply with a release order and an HTA offence.

The motorcycle had been reported stolen in July.
