Oncoming dump in part of northern Manitoba prompts snowfall warning

A snowfall warning is in effect for part of northern Manitoba as a total of 20 to 30 centimetres of snow is expected to fall by the end of this week, Environment Canada says.

The warning, issued shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, impacts the following regions:

  • Thompson.
  • Nelson House.
  • South Indian Lake and Amisk Provincial Park.
  • Split Lake.
  • York Landing.

The snow is expected to begin Tuesday night and continue over a 24 hour period, the statement says. Although the snow will lessen on Wednesday night, light snowfall is likely to continue through Thursday before it starts to subside on Friday.

Accumulating snow could make it harder to navigate highways, roads, walkways and parking lots, according to Environment Canada. Heavy snowfall also has the potential to rapidly reduce visibility.

Manitobans in the affected areas are asked to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Environment Canada also recommends monitoring their weather alerts and conditions, as well as looking into emergency plans and kits.

Snowfall warnings are issued in Manitoba when upwards of 10 centimetres of snow are expected to fall in 12 hours or less, according to Environment Canada’s website.
