Bushie noted that the money follows a period of frozen municipal funding and represents a renewed commitment to rural communities. The government is working to reset its relationship with municipal partners by supporting strategic projects that promote growth and sustainability while helping protect towns and cities from potential disasters.

The funding is part of the new Manitoba Growth, Renewal, and Opportunities for Municipalities (Manitoba GRO) program. Under the program, rural municipalities can apply for grants covering up to 50% of eligible capital project costs. The investment categories include public safety focusing on disaster prevention, flood mitigation, climate adaptation, roads, bridges, active transportation infrastructure, recreational facilities and solid waste management.

Kam Blight, president of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities said the funding is significants to local communities. Blight also welcomed the opportunity for collaboration with the province to ensure the projects align with the interests and growth goals of municipalities.

Funding for the Manitoba GRO program comes from the $73.8-million rural strategic infrastructure basket under the Strategic Municipal Investment Fund.
