HAL’S KITCHEN: Happy Thanksgiving! Turkey prices are down …

Article content

For me, it matters less about what you’re eating this weekend and more about who you’re with as you celebrate Thanksgiving. I hope you’re surrounded by family and friends and your home is bursting with gratitude. But that said, there may be more turkey on the table this year, thanks to lower prices. Food Fare’s Munther Zeid says frozen turkeys, “for some strange reason,” are very cheap, almost back to pre-pandemic prices. The cost of a fresh turkey is higher but if frozen works for you, Munther says it’s as little as $1.69 a pound. There also may be a bit of a glut of turkeys in local stores, as the holiday has snuck up on many people, with the weather so nice. My wife Jackie and I aren’t having a big meal this weekend but at $1.69 a pound, I may have to cook up one of those frozen turkeys after the fact for sandwiches. I hope you’re having a wonderful long weekend.

CHEESE NIPS PLEASE

Former Winnipegger Matt Kozminski had an unusual request when I talked to him on my radio show Wednesday ahead of Hurricane Milton. “Please get me a couple Cheese Nips at Salisbury House and send them UPS, I’d really appreciate it.” After that aired, Sals operations manager Dave Petrishen sent me a text to ask for Matt’s cell number. Dave says they’re figuring out how to send Matt and his family those burgers in Naples, Florida. I love it when a plan comes together.

MEN & WOMEN DIGEST DIFFERENTLY

Researchers have found differences in how men and women metabolize their food. A new University of Waterloo study says women’s bodies are more efficient at burning fat, while men are better at burning carbs, especially after a fast. For example, a high-carbohydrate breakfast of toast or oatmeal might work better for guys, while gals may want to stick to high-fat options like avocado or eggs. It’s suspected that differences in men and women’s livers are at play here.
