“I have informed the Prime Minister that I will not be seeking re-election in 2025 or whenever the next election is called,” Vandal said in the statement.

“This has been a very difficult decision as I have been in elected office for very close to 30 years, when I was voted in as city councillor in 1995 for St. Boniface. However, it is time to move on to the next stage of my life after many years of representing Winnipeggers.”

Vandal, who has represented Saint Boniface-Saint Vital since 2015, has been a key figure in local and federal politics. He served on the Winnipeg City Council from 1995 to 2004 and again from 2006 to 2014. Vandal also ran for mayor in 2004, finishing second to Sam Katz, and briefly served as acting mayor following Glen Murray’s resignation.

In his federal career, Vandal was elected to the House of Commons in 2015 as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He became the Minister of Northern Affairs in 2019 and later held roles as Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and the Prairies Economic Development Agency of Canada.

He mentioned accomplishments such as the devolution of Nunavut, strides towards net zero, the resuscitation of Churchill, and the revitalization of Winnipeg’s core through partnerships with the SCO, True North and MMF as proud moments in his career.

“The Nation-to-Nation, government-to-government relationship which has produced co-developed legislation and investments in Indigenous-led child welfare, languages, and UNDRIP has set a standard that future governments will be pressured to match,” Vandal said.

“I look forward to completing my term as MP and delivering for my constituents until the next election.”
