The fire broke out shortly after midnight at a two-story home on Flora Avenue. When police arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, with a man trapped in the basement.

The doors were inaccessible due to the intensity of the fire and the basement windows were boarded up with plywood and secured with bars. Officers on the scene used a shovel and ice scraper from the yard to start removing the plywood until backup arrived with breaching tools. After gaining access, they located the man inside and guided him through the smoke and flames to the window. He was brought to safety.

Paramedics transported the 53-year-old man to the hospital in unstable condition and he has since been upgraded to stable. Two police officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The fire was brought under control and investigators suspect the fire was deliberately set and are treating it as an arson. The Major Crimes Unit and fire investigators are continuing their work.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit or Crime Stoppers.
