School urges caution after teen hit in crosswalk

A Winnipeg teenager is recovering after he was struck by a vehicle while using a crosswalk in Tuxedo on Thursday afternoon.

St. Paul’s High School briefed families about the incident Friday, and issued a reminder to all community members to exercise caution in school zones.

“We are relieved to share that the student is expected to make a full recovery,” the private school’s administration, led by president Kevin Booth, said in the memo.

“While the student is on the mend, this serves as an important reminder for all of us — parents, students, and drivers alike — to remain vigilant around crosswalks, particularly during busy times when foot traffic is heaviest.”

Drivers should be “extra cautious” when approaching crosswalks and parking lots, per the email.

Administration is also urging pedestrians to always use a button to activate crosswalk lights where available and both ensure cars have come to a full stop and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

The incident took place near the intersection of Grant Avenue and Laidlaw Boulevard, within a short walking distance from campuses, including St. Paul’s, Laidlaw School, Shaftesbury High School and the Canadian Mennonite University.

In an email to elementary school families about the incident, Laidlaw leadership asked families to refrain from double parking during drop-off and pick-up times for safety reasons.

The Winnipeg Police Service said it was unaware of the recent collision involving a pedestrian and motorist near St. Paul’s.
