Several weapon and drug charges bestowed over the weekend

Winnipeg police responded to a report of a man armed with a machete who approached a large group of children playing in a green space on Saturday night at about 7:30 p.m. The 18-year-old Winnipeg man was charged with assault with a weapon.

Central District General Patrol Officers, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team (TST), attended the area and located a 12-year-old victim who was not injured, police said in a release. Officers were directed to the 600 block of Pacific Avenue where they located the suspect and the machete. The man was detained in custody.

This was one of the several weapon and drug charges bestowed over the weekend.

Early Saturday morning officers patrolling Watt Street and Thames Avenue in the Elmwood identified two men from an earlier suspicious incident. One man was found with a knife in his waistband and in possession of five grams of crack cocaine. The other with an airport rifle under his clothing. They face drug and weapons charges and were released on undertakings as mandated by the Criminal Code.

Police received several calls Saturday afternoon about a woman waving a knife “in a threatening manner” in the area of Selkirk Avenue and Salter Street. This 32-year-old woman armed with a hunting-style knife was arrested after being hit with a Taser. She was charged with possession of a weapon and has been released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.

A 28-year-old Selkirk resident who was a suspect in a Winnipeg Police Service guns and gangs unit investigation was arrested Thursday evening with a loaded Glock handgun in his possession. He remains in police custody “until further disposition.” The Firearm Investigative Analysis Section continues to investigate the firearm seizure.
