Car went into other lane, caused fatal Trans-Canada Highway crash: RCMP

RCMP now say a crash that killed one person and injured three others on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Winnipeg was caused by a driver side-swiping another vehicle.

Police said further investigation by a forensic collision reconstructionist determined an eastbound car crossed over into the other lane and hit an SUV in the other eastbound lane at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The mechanical condition of the car was not a factor in the collision, RCMP said in a news release Friday. Police had said Wednesday that the vehicles were side-by-side when a passenger’s side tire of the car — including the control arm and other mechanical parts — came off and struck the SUV.

The SUV, which was in the south lane, went into the ditch and rolled. The 59-year-old Steinbach man driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 45-year-old man from the Rural Municipality of Hanover, was taken to hospital.

The car caught fire. The driver, a 25-year-old Calgary man, was transported to hospital. Police said Wednesday that a vehicle travelling behind the other two struck debris from the crash. The driver, a 28-year-old Kenora woman, was taken to hospital.

The three people who survived the crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries, RCMP said Wednesday.

The incident happened in the general area of Centre of Canada Park
