Man assaulted with machete and bear spray in North End park, no suspect arrested

Winnipeg police continue to search for a suspect after a man was seriously assaulted while at a Nort End park early Tuesday morning. 

Officers responded to Main St. near St. Johns Ave. at around 4 a.m. yesterday where they found a 44-year-old man suffering from serious injuries. 

He was rushed to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable. 

Police say the victim was alone in a park near St. Johns Avenue and Main Street at around 3:30 a.m. when he was attacked from behind with a machete and bear spray. Despite his injuries, the man walked to Main St. where he collapsed and the police were called.

Investigators say the assault appears to be unprovoked, with no known connection between the victim and the suspect. The man was also unable to get a description of the suspect. 

The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and is working to determine a description of the suspect.
