Employee at Winnipeg shipping company charged in $1.9M theft of Apple products

A man has been charged in connection with the theft of more than $1.9 million in Apple products while they were in-transit at the Winnipeg shipping company where he worked, police say.

In January, an employee of an international parcel delivery company told police about an extensive theft investigation that involved Apple electronic products, according to a Thursday news release.

Winnipeg police’s property crime unit opened its own investigation, and identified an employee, 30, whom they believed to be responsible, the release says.

The man was arrested in late January and charged with a number of offences related to theft as well as the possession of property obtained by crime.

Officers then searched the man’s home and vehicle, seizing a stolen laptop and cellphone, along with Canadian currency determined to be the proceeds from the sale of stolen property, police say.

He was released on an undertaking during the investigation.

Investigators allege that between September and January, the man stole about $1.9 million worth of Apple products as they were being shipped, and then sold them online.

In March, investigators learned that the man had deposited more than $900,000 into his personal bank accounts, using some of that money to buy a home worth more than $600,000, according to the release.

The man, who was arrested again on Wednesday, is facing several charges including possessing and trafficking property obtained by crime, theft over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime, police say.

The man was released with the Crown’s consent, police say.

Anyone with information about the thefts that might help investigators is asked to call 204-986-2426, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477), or submit a secure tip online.
