The investigation began earlier this year after the WPS became aware of the allegations. On May 7, Winnipeg police notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), which took over the investigation and requested the assistance of the WPS Professional Standards Unit.

Following a detailed internal investigation in consultation with the IIU and Manitoba Justice officials, three officers were formally charged on Wednesday.

A 47-year-old, a 21-year veteran of the WPS, faces multiple charges, including breach of trust, obstructing a police officer, obstructing justice, theft under $5,000, and unlawful entry. The investigation alleges that between October 22, 2022, and November 2, 2024, the officer engaged in actions both on and off duty that involved the disclosure of confidential information, obstruction of justice, interference with police investigations, and theft.
