The Manitoba government has announced a $25-million contribution towards capital projects at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Children’s Hospital as part of the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Better Futures Campaign.

The funding will support several key areas: A modernized emergency department to improve patient flow, 70 updated in-patient pediatric beds designed for comfort and safety, new operating rooms to accommodate complex surgeries, and redevelopment of the pediatric hemodialysis unit to ensure a safer and more comfortable experience for children undergoing treatment.
Premier Wab Kinew highlighted the importance of investing in health care for children. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the hospital provides the best possible care, noting the significance of the facility for parents and families across the province. “As a parent, there is nothing more important than your child’s health,” Kinew said. “We’re proud to support this ambitious campaign to modernize a new emergency department and improve pediatric care for the littlest Manitobans.”

The Children’s Hospital Foundation launched its largest fundraising effort in 2022, aiming to raise $75 million for improvements at the Children’s Hospital and its research institute. The campaign, which focused on enhancing facilities, equipment, and technology, has already exceeded its goal, thanks to the support of the community and the foundation’s efforts.
Stefano Grande, president and CEO of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, expressed gratitude for the support received from Manitobans and the provincial government. Grande noted that the funding would help address space limitations in surgical suites and the pediatric dialysis unit, along with necessary electronic upgrades and multidisciplinary team areas. He acknowledged the challenges of maintaining the aging building, which is one of the oldest children’s hospitals in Canada, and emphasized the need for ongoing renovations to keep up with the care provided by specialized pediatric teams.
The $25-million investment from the Manitoba government is designated for the ‘Manitoba Project,’ focusing on significant capital infrastructure upgrades. The aim is to reduce emergency room wait times, expand surgical capacity, and enhance the overall experience for children and their families at the hospital.
The provincial government’s investment is seen as a crucial step towards advancing pediatric care at HSC Children’s Hospital and meeting the evolving health needs of children in Manitoba.
