The Winnipeg Airports Authority announced Friday that Runway 18/36, which is nearly 3.4 kilometres in length, will undergo extensive pavement repairs, electrical enhancements, and drainage restoration.

It’s part of a preventative maintenance schedule, according to the WAA, that is required every 10-15 years to maintain the integrity of runways to ensure the safety and movement of people and goods.

Work has already begun, with the WAA pegging completion of the construction by the fall.

The project is being staggered over multiple phases to minimize its impact. Lead-up work was completed last year, and sections of both runways will be available for use throughout the upgrade process.

Still, the WAA says the main runway will need to close entirely at times, leading to increased and decreased traffic in several neighbourhoods, including St. James, Brooklands, Charleswood, Tuxedo, River Heights, Fort Garry, Fort Richmond, St. Vital, Wolseley and South End.

Noise abatement procedures will be implemented for departure and arrival altitudes, along with nighttime operation restrictions.

WAA says they are working with airlines to ensure normal operations throughout.
