Manitoba under extreme cold warning as polar vortex takes hold of the Prairies

The entire province is under an extreme cold warning as a polar vortex takes hold of the Prairies.

Southern Manitoba, including the city of Winnipeg can expect to see a prolonged period of very cold air temperatures at or below -30 with wind chill values near -40 and below this weekend.

In northern Manitoba residents can expect temperatures to hover around -35 or lower with the wind chill near -45.

Environment Canada is reminding Manitobans that extreme cold puts everyone at risk and frostbite can occur in minutes.

They say it is important to dress warmly and in layers. Synthetic and wool fabrics provide good insulation.

Environment Canada is also encouraging construction workers to take break and pet owners to reduce their animal’s time outdoors.

The bitterly cold weather is expected to stick around until Sunday before warming up slightly in western Saskatchewan and ending Monday in eastern Manitoba.
