The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires in vacant, boarded houses early Saturday morning, Jan 11, 2025. One firefighter was injured.

At 2:24 a.m., WFPS crews were called to a fire in a vacant house on the 200 block of Powers Street. Flames were visible upon arrival. Firefighters attacked the fire and brought it under control by 2:46 a.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WFPS crews previously responded to a fire at this location in March 2023.
Later, at 6:26 a.m., crews were dispatched to a fire in a vacant house on the 400 block of Aberdeen Avenue. Smoke was visible when firefighters arrived. Initially, crews launched an offensive attack, but worsening conditions required them to switch to a defensive approach using aerial ladders. Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene throughout the morning, and residents are advised to avoid the area.
A firefighter sustained an injury at the scene. Paramedics assessed and transported the firefighter to the hospital in stable condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and damage estimates are not yet available. WFPS responded to a fire at this location in Nov. 2024.
