Men face more charges in June shooting, robbery incidents

Two men arrested after a shooting incident in June have been charged in connection with other crimes that month.

The Winnipeg Police Service said this spring that three people were charged after shots were fired from an apartment balcony into a field. Police said the occupants of a suite on Ballantrae Drive fired multiple rifle rounds into a field behind the Crossings at the Refinery District apartments at 425 Ballantrae at about 1:50 a.m. on June 15.

The WPS said officers seized an SKS semi-automatic rifle, two other long guns in states of disassembly, ammunition, 23 rocks of crack cocaine worth an estimated $4,600 and drug-trafficking materials.

Mason Buchner-Monkman, 24, Devon Nicholas James Meyer, 24, and a 23-year-old Winnipeg woman were charged, police said at the time.

In March, the WPS major crimes unit linked the men to two more incidents in June and obtained arrest warrants.

Two men were in the area of Magnus Avenue and Main Street on June 15 when one pulled out a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and passed it to the other. The second man fired the gun “numerous times,” striking an unoccupied vehicle parked in the 1000 block of Main. The suspects fled before police arrived.

Two suspects tried to rob the Delta hotel at 350 St Mary Ave. at about 12:40 a.m. on June 15. Two men told the male front-desk employees they were being robbed, and one of the suspects discharged bear spray towards the 31-year-old and 61-year-old victims. Both suspects fled on foot without getting any money.

Investigators learned in December that Buchner-Monkman had fled to Nelson, B.C., violating the conditions of his release order. Police obtained an expanded, Canada-wide warrant and asked the Nelson Police Department to find and arrest the man.

Buchner-Monkman, who was wanted on eight warrants, was arrested in Nelson on Wednesday and has since been flown to Winnipeg. He is charged with multiple offences and failure to comply with release order conditions.

Meyer was re-arrested and charged at the Milner Ridge Correctional Facility on Feb. 17.
