White out conditions on Manitoba highways as blizzard blows in

Western and southern Manitoba are experiencing some white-out conditions due to high wind speeds on Friday.

“I am travelling on Highway 12 south of Steinbach and the wind has definitely picked up and there is blowing,” Crystal texted us in our studios at 7 a.m. “Snow starting already over the highways. Some spots are not as bad as others.”

West of Winnipeg is also starting to experience bad driving conditions along the Trans-Canada highway.

“Heavy snow falling at Headingly,” says Maria on Facebook. “I tried to go Highway #1 westbound to Portage and turned around at Saint Francis. The visibility went from perfect to zero in a matter of 10 minutes.”

Highway 59 south of Winnipeg is also being affected Friday morning.

“I almost hit the ditch northbound on Hwy 59 from St. Pierre-Jolys to Niverville,” says Jayme on Facebook. “The winds are already picking up. A semi passed me and blew my truck to the right. Terribly scary out here.”

According to Environment Canada, travel from Friday morning to afternoon is not advised.

“You’ll definitely want to reduce travel on Friday if possible, and try to travel before or after,” says Kyle McAulay, a meteorologist from Environment Canada.

North of Winnipeg is also experiencing mixed precipitation.

“Came down at 7:00ish when I was on the North Perimeter and Henderson-Highway 6,” said Braydon on Facebook. “Heavy wind and rain/snow-like precipitation. Super limited visibility.”
