Wednesday morning, around 10 a.m., Thompson Rural RCMP received a call about an attempted child abduction in the community of Split Lake, RCMP said.
Police said they immediately went to the scene and began searching for a suspect, but said the suspect had “possibly left the community” before RCMP were notified.
Police said an eight-year-old girl was walking to school when a male she did not know pulled up in a white van and offered her a ride when she was already near the school.
Police say the girl made it to the school safely.
RCMP said the girl described the man as of an unknown age, with short white hair and wearing a grey jacket.
Police added other witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a “partially dirty white van” that was spotted numerous times driving by the TCN Gas Bar in the community, which is located about 150 kilometres northeast of the City of Thompson.
Police said patrols were conducted in and around the community, but the suspect has not yet been located.
Thompson Rural RCMP ask anyone in the area with video related to the incident to contact the detachment at 204-778-3050, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or the secure tip line at manitobacrimestoppers.com.
