Man faces impaired driving charges after collision with pedestrian in wheelchair

A man using a wheelchair was hit by a person driving an SUV which then fled the scene in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday.

Winnipeg police were near Isabel Street and Bannatyne Avenue around 9 p.m. when the officers saw a 50-year-old man crossing the street in his wheelchair, according to a Tuesday news release.

An SUV then struck the man, knocking him out of the wheelchair and causing significant injuries, the release said.

Police said the driver made no attempt to stop at the scene of the collision and sped off before he was stopped by police a short distance away. The driver, a 59-year-old man, was taken into custody and later released.

Police provided medical aid to the victim who was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable.

Police learned that the 59-year-old man was driving while impaired, according to the release, and he was charged with two counts related to impaired driving.
