Police were dealing with a routine motor vehicle collision near Ellice Avenue and Colony Street on Sunday when an unexpected distraction appeared behind them. A 21-year-old man parked his vehicle behind a marked cruiser, stepped out holding what appeared to be an open alcoholic beverage, and began conversing with the officers. His behaviour raised suspicions as he exhibited signs of impairment.

After briefly interacting with the police, the man returned to his vehicle. Officers instructed him to stay stopped, but instead, he put the car in reverse, striking an officer and running over his foot before speeding away from the scene.
More than an hour later, around 8:26 p.m., a passerby near Pembina Highway and Bairdmore Boulevard spotted the suspect outside his vehicle and suspected he was intoxicated. Police were called and officers arrived to take the man into custody without further trouble.
The suspect, a 21-year-old Winnipeg man, has been charged with impaired operation of a vehicle, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon. The investigation is ongoing.
