Winnipeg police said officers witnessed a hit-and-run Sunday night when a driver struck a man in a wheelchair at the intersection of Isabel Street and Bannatyne Avenue.

Around 9:02 p.m., officers saw a 50-year-old man crossing the street in his wheelchair when an SUV, driving south ahead of them, hit him. The impact threw the victim from his wheelchair, leaving him with serious injuries. The driver did not stop and fled the scene.
Police stopped the SUV a short distance away and arrested the 59-year-old driver. While other officers assisted the victim, police determined that the driver was impaired.
The victim was taken to the hospital in unstable condition but was later upgraded to stable.
The driver is facing charges related to impaired driving and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. He was released with an appearance notice.
