A pair of Thompson residents were injured in separate stabbings early Saturday which RCMP believe were carried out by the same group of young men armed with a machete.

At around 12:30 a.m., Thompson RCMP received a report that a man had been seen walking toward the hospital with a stab wound. Officers attended the hospital and located a 33-year-old who had been injured with an edged weapon believed to be a machete.

RCMP said the man had been walking in the Brandon Crescent area when he was approached by three or four young men who asked the victim for a cigarette. He was then physically assaulted and injured by the weapon.

At shortly after 2 a.m., Mounties were patrolling in the area of Brandon Crescent and Queen’s Bay when an injured woman flagged down officers. The 33-year-old woman had been walking home when she was approached by three or four males who asked her for a cigarette. She was then physically assaulted and was injured by an edged weapon, believed to be a machete.

Both victims were treated and released from local hospital.

“These attacks appear to be random and aimed at vulnerable people walking alone at night,” said Staff Sgt. Dave Michaud, Thompson RCMP Detachment Commander. “We are asking everyone to be extra vigilant when out and about at night, and to avoid walking alone in the early morning hours, if possible. The RCMP is increasing patrols in the area, and is actively canvassing for information.”
