Weapons-related – Arrests

Between April 29 and April 30, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service’s General Patrol Units, with the assistance of the Auxillary Force Cadet Unit, attended multiple weapons-related calls involving knives and a hatchet.

On the 29th at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers from the Central District responded to the report of a male on a transit bus armed with a knife, waving it around and threatening to harm passengers.

The driver stopped the bus near Portage/Vaughn, and police were contacted. The male who displayed signs of intoxication was taken into custody, and the knife was seized. Nobody was injured or wished to pursue further police involvement once the threat was removed.   

Abraham Horace SAUNDERS (32) was charged with the following offences and detained in custody:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order x 2

On the 29th at approximately 10:45 p.m., the Auxillary Force Cadet Unit was patrolling near Hargrave/Ellice, where a group was observed consuming liquor in public, contrary to the LCGA. As Cadets approached the group, they dispersed, except for one individual who attempted to conceal the liquor. He displayed signs of public intoxication and was taken into custody. A knife was discovered within his waistband. The accused was turned over for processing to General Patrol officers from the Central District.

Wayne Wesley DUCK (24) was charged with the following offences and detained in custody:

  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition

On the 29th at 2:30 a.m., General Patrol officers from the North District responded to the report of a male armed with a hatchet and damaging a vehicle in the 200 block of Weitzel Street.

Police arrested a 22-year-old male without incident and seized a hatchet. The victim in the matter indicated the male was unknown to him.

The accused is facing the following charges and was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code:

  • Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment
  • Possession of a Weapon

On the 29th at approximately 2:45 a.m., officers from the Central District responded to the report of a female acting erratically and waving a knife around people in the 100 block of Henry Ave. She was observed smashing out the glass of a window in the area.

Police in the area took her into custody, where she was found in possession of a knife, as well as some methamphetamine.

A 24-year-old female was subsequently released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code. She is facing the following charges:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment
  • Poss of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine

On the 30th at approximately 1:30 a.m., General Patrol officers from the Central District recognized a male who they believed had curfew conditions standing outside an establishment in the 200 block of Maryland.

Subsequent police checks confirmed his curfew breach, and during his arrest, a knife was located in his pants.

A 14-year-old male is facing the following charges and is still in police custody:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 3
