Man hired for home renos accused of assaulting senior in Portage la Prairie

A 35-year-old man is accused of assaulting a 76-year-old in Portage la Prairie, after he was hired to complete some renovations at the senior’s home, Manitoba RCMP say.

RCMP got a report of an assault in progress at a Portage la Prairie home just after 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said in a Thursday news release.

When officers arrived, they saw a man jumping on the roof of a vehicle, RCMP said. He was arrested.

The 76-year-old victim was seriously injured, police said. He was taken to the local hospital before being transferred to Winnipeg for medical treatment. He remains in hospital with serious injuries, RCMP said Thursday.

Police say their investigation has determined the victim had hired the 35-year-old, whom he knew, to complete some renovations at his home.

Police say the younger man also damaged property at the residence.

He’s been charged with aggravated assault and two counts of mischief.
