Hail, heavy rain pelt parts of Winnipeg Thursday afternoon

A severe thunderstorm pelted parts of Winnipeg with hail, strong winds and heavy rain Thursday afternoon. 

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city at about 4:10 p.m., The weather agency was tracking a severe thunderstorm it said was capable of producing strong winds, up to nickel-size hail and heavy rain.

A spring storm Thursday afternoon left piles of nickel-sized hailstones heaped up along the sides of roads on the western outskirts of Winnipeg, including Westwood, where Debbie Caruk captured the aftermath on one street.

Nickel-size hail was reported in several Winnipeg neighbourhoods, including in Charleswood, Westwood, Waverley Heights and Linden Woods. 

Thunderstorm warnings were later issued for areas just east and south of Winnipeg. Environment Canada said toonie-sized hail and wind gusts up to 90 km/h were possible in the area around New Bothwell and Niverville.

As of about 6:05p.m., the agency said the storm was located six kilometres east of Niverville, Man., moving southeast at 15 km/h.

Environment Canada said there is a risk of thunderstorms in the Winnipeg region once again on Friday afternoon.
