Man arrested, released for robberies

A man arrested for a string of purse-snatchings was released from custody.

A suspect approached a woman and asked her for bus fare at a discount store on the 2800 block of Pembina Highway on Dec. 12. When the victim took out her purse, the man grabbed it and fled, then used the victim’s credit card to complete transactions totalling more than $4,500.

A man did the same thing to a woman at a drug store on the 1100 block of Pembina on Dec. 28, pushing her to the ground. The suspect used the victim’s credit card to make more than $800 in purchases.

A man grabbed a woman’s wallet at the same drug store on Feb. 11.

Police investigated and found out about two other robberies that month. One was at a discount store on the 1300 block of Ellice Avenue and the other was at a mall on the 2000 block of Corydon Avenue. The Winnipeg Police Service said Tuesday a suspect committed robberies against victims who have yet to be identified.

A 26-year-old man was arrested April 16 and is facing three robbery charges and two charges of fraud under $5,000. No charges have been laid in connection with the two February robberies where the victims are unknown.

The man was released and has not yet been charged.

The WPS major crimes unit is still investigating and is asking anyone who wants to speak with police to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
