Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to four structure fires.
McGee Street fire
At 8:06 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a two-and-a-half storey vacant house in the 300 block of McGee Street. The fire was discovered and reported by an on-duty Winnipeg Police Service crew.
When WFPS crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. They launched a defensive fire attack, fighting the fire from outside. They used hose lines and a ladder truck to apply water to the fire. Once conditions improved, they switched to an offensive strategy. The fire was declared under control at 10:13 p.m.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Alexander Avenue fire
At 1:41 a.m. on Monday, May 27, crews responded to reports of a garage fire in the 1400 block of Alexander Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the fire was starting to spread to the adjacent house. They launched a defensive fire attack and brought the fire under control at 2:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Erin Street fire
Crews responded to reports of fire at a commercial building in the 900 block of Erin Street at 2:33 a.m. on Monday, May 27.
Heavy smoke was coming from the structure when crews arrived on scene. Firefighters initially launched an offensive fire attack, but switched to a defensive mode when conditions became unsafe to be inside. They used hose lines and a ladder truck to apply water to the fire. It was declared under control at 4:35 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The structure suffered significant fire, water, and smoke damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Logan Avenue fire
At 4:35 a.m. on May 27, WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a large three-storey commercial building in the 1000 block of Logan Avenue.
Heavy smoke was pouring from the building when crews arrived on scene. The smoke was visible from many areas of the city Monday morning.
Firefighters launched a defensive fire attack, fighting the flames from outside the building. They are using hose lines and ladder trucks to apply water to the fire. Crews are expected to remain on scene throughout the day.
The rail line running through the property has been shut down to rail traffic while crews are on scene.
Logan Avenue remains open, but residents should exercise caution in the area.
