On May 16, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a hotel gaming room in the 600 block of Berry Street for the report of a robbed person.

Investigating West District General Patrol, officers learned that the 59-year-old male victim was playing VLTs when an adult male suspect next to him engaged in a conversation. As the victim continued to play, the suspect produced a machete and robbed the victim of approximately $130. The suspect fled on foot before police arrived, and the victim was uninjured.

On May 26, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the suspect returned to the business to play VLTs and was recognized by staff as involved in the initial reported robbery. Staff summoned police; however, the suspect fled before their arrival.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., attending officers located the suspect in the 1800 block of Ellice Avenue and arrested him without incident. Officers located a machete concealed on his person, which was seized as evidence.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and charged 23-year-old Norman Glen BEARDY of Winnipeg with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon, Carry Concealed Weapon, and Fail to Comply with Probation Order.

He was detained in custody.
