Man dead in officer-involved shooting in Niverville, RCMP investigating multiple scenes

Officers with the Manitoba RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service are on scene of an officer-involved shooting in Niverville on Wednesday morning.

According to the RCMP, one man is dead in relation to this incident.

Mounties note police have been in the area of Drovers Run since 3 a.m. The area will be blocked off for much of the day.

Images from the scene show multiple RCMP officers surrounding a truck in the parking lot of a gas station and Tim Hortons restaurant.

Myron Dyck, the mayor of Niverville, said he doesn’t know much else beyond what RCMP has shared, but added he was sad seeing the news Wednesday morning.

“My heart goes to both sides of the incident, to the emergency services side that deals with stressful situations like this, and also to the other side, both have families that they love and love them,” said Dyck.

He said he is thankful for the RCMP and the work they do, as well as the people of Niverville for their understanding and patience during this incident.

The Hanover School Division has put Niverville High School, Niverville Middle School and Niverville Elementary School into hold and secure due to the ongoing investigation.

Students will remain inside all day, including during recess and lunch.

Red River Valley School Division has also confirmed it is keeping students inside at Ecole Heritage in St. Pierre Jolys, as well as students in Ecole Saint Malo in Saint Malo.

Winnipeg police also responded to a scene at the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 305.

An RCMP spokesperson has confirmed the two scenes are connected.

A Winnipeg police vehicle with what appears to be bullet holes in the windshield and a damaged front end can be seen.

RCMP are also present in Otterburne, located nearly 20 minutes south of Niverville, near Providence University College and Theological Seminary.

Police will provide more information on the situation once it becomes available.
