Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Manitoba Avenue and Yorkwood Drive

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires.

Manitoba Avenue fire
At 9:03 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a one-and-a-half-storey converted residential dwelling in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue.

Crews found smoke coming from the structure when they arrived on scene. They entered the building and fought the fire from the inside. The fire was extinguished by 9:33 p.m.

Residents self-evacuated before crews arrived on scene. No injuries were reported.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team helped displaced residents find temporary accommodations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Yorkwood Drive fire
At 4:36 a.m. on Sunday, June 9, crews responded to reports of fire at a one-storey home in the 100 block of Yorkwood Drive.

Upon arrival to the scene, smoke was coming from the structure. Firefighters launched a defensive fire attack, fighting the fire from outside. They brought it under control at 5:08 a.m.

Residents self-evacuated prior to crews arriving on scene. Firefighters completed a search of the house and rescued one cat.

Damage estimates are not available. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an overheated lithium ion battery.
