Education Minister Nello Altomare appointed a three-person oversight panel to “support” the MVSD board of trustees The Dauphin-based school division announced on Wednesday.

“MVSD Board of Trustees is committed to demonstrating strong governance and fostering relations within our community,” MVSD said in its release.

The newly appointed panel includes Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) cabinet minister Frances Chartrand, Brandon School Division (BSD) trustee Jim Murray, and Manitoba Teachers’ Society (MTS) staff officer Andrea Zaroda.

“This panel will assist in navigating recent board and staff turnover, strengthening governance practices, and community relations,” MVSD said. “They will also ensure that MVSD progresses on key priorities such as diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.”

On June 3, Stephen Jaddock was removed from his role as MVSD superintendent, after several trustees voted to oust him, and one day later MVSD said that “long-time” trustees Leifa Misko, Floyd Martens, and Scott McCallum had all tendered their resignations from the board effective immediately.

As well in late April, Paul Coffey, one of the trustees who voted to oust Jaddock, made a presentation during a board meeting where he made claims that residential schools were “good,” and defended the use of the word “Indian” when referring to Indigenous people and used the term multiple times while speaking.

That presentation led to Altomare announcing in April he would conduct a provincial governance review of the division, and a provincial spokesperson said this week that the review is ongoing.
