Man waving imitation pistol leads to drug seizure

Winnipeg police seized a sizable amount of meth, fentanyl, cocaine and opioid pills after being called about a man waving a gun from the window of his car on Thursday morning.

Police said they were called about the driver, who was in a parking lot on the 200 block of Maryland Street, at about 4:30 a.m.

Patrol officers found the vehicle in a drive-thru and arrested the driver and passenger. In the vehicle, police found a starter pistol and 3.1 kilograms of meth, 67 grams of fentanyl, 32 grams of cocaine and some opioid pills, as well as $2,700 in Canadian cash.

Louise Bridge to close as of Monday

The city is closing the Louise Bridge for two weeks of maintenance beginning Monday.

The bridge will be closed from 6 a.m. on Monday to 6 p.m. on June 28.

The city has warned motorists to give themselves extra time to travel, suggesting people heading downtown from westbound Nairn Avenue or southbound Stadacona Street to use Midwinter Avenue to the Disraeli Freeway as an alternative.

Pedestrians will still be able to access one side of the bridge throughout the maintenance work.

Man hit with more charges in kidnapping

A man who shot himself during a kidnapping in Gods Lake Narrows in April has been charged with further offences.

On April 1, RCMP in the northern community were called to a shooting at about 8 a.m., where they found a 35-year-old man with serious injuries from a bullet wound. He was flown to Winnipeg for treatment.

Major crimes investigators later determined the 35-year-old and a 28-year-old woman had kidnapped a 28-year-old man at gunpoint, took him elsewhere and held him at gunpoint, but at one point, the male kidnapper shot himself. The other two weren’t hurt.

The 35-year-old, George Amos Watt, and the woman were initially charged with kidnapping with a firearm and forcible confinement. On May 29, Watt was charged with gun offences and failing to comply with probation.
