Cash from proceeds of crime given to northern Manitoba communities

The province is providing more than $265,000 from the criminal property forfeiture fund to support programs and services aimed at preventing crime and promoting safer communities in northern Manitoba.

A Manitoba government news release said the funding will help rural law enforcement agencies purchase safety equipment and support community initiatives.

The funds include $150,000 for the purchase of vehicles to enhance the operations of First Nations safety officers in five First Nations.

“Every Manitoban deserves to feel safe in their communities,” Justice Minister Matt Wiebe said in the news release. “This funding will support important initiatives in northern Manitoba that advance reconciliation, build community connections, enhance safety and provide opportunities for youth.”

RCMP north district commander Supt. Paul Peddle said engaging community members, especially youth, in positive community-focused activities “is such an important piece when it comes to crime prevention and safer communities.”
