“One house has been completely leveled by an explosion. Firefighters are working to stabilize the situation and put fires out at neighbouring homes. At this point, no injuries have been reported. More details to follow,” a social media post from the city said.

The incident happened at about 11:18 a.m., according to the city’s incident response website, which lists more than 20 fire and rescue units at the scene on Camrose Bay.

A neighbour who was at home at the time said told the Winnipeg Sun the initial blast was incredible.

“It wasn’t a matter of what you saw at first. What we felt was the concussion. A chandelier in the kitchen shook and a couple of its bulbs fell on my head,” said Patricia Carroll, 80. “When we looked outside, we saw flames as high as you could believe and thick smoke.”

A fire official at the scene told reporters that members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and Winnipeg Police Service are still working to locate the people living in the home and aren’t sure whether they were home at the time.

Some people were evacuated but most have been able to shelter in place. It’s believed several of the homes are too damaged to be inhabited. Damaged structures include some across the street as well as to the rear and both sides.

It’s too early to speculate on the cause of the explosion, the official said.

The city asks people to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to “manage the scene safely.”
