Three arrested in separate Interlake shooting incidents

Three men are facing charges in connection with two unrelated shooting incidents in the Interlake.

Gimli RCMP were sent to a rural property at the intersection of Highway 7 and Provincial Road 231 in Fraserwood at about 2:10 a.m. on June 23. They were told someone was rummaging through toolboxes in several parked vehicles on the property.

Police did not find the suspicious person or the vehicle they were in. As they were about to leave, the officers heard a rapid succession of gunfire nearby. They exited their vehicles and took cover behind them.

“It is believed between 40 and 50 shots were fired towards the officer’s positions,” RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

After the shooting stopped, an SUV was seen heading towards an exit gate. The officers approached and took two men into custody but did not find any guns.

Police obtained a search warrant for the nearby home where the men live and seized multiple guns, BB guns and ammunition.

The men, ages 48 and 20, have been charged with careless use of a firearm, discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The previous week, at about 9:40 a.m. on June 20, RCMP were called after shots were fired towards a vehicle as it was travelling on Silverdale Avenue in Winnipeg Beach.

RCMP said a man at a home fired the shots, pointed a gun at the victim and went inside.

A 62-year-old man was arrested. Police seized a shotgun and a pellet gun after obtaining a search warrant. The man is facing charges of uttering threats, discharging a firearm with intent, pointing a firearm and other gun offences.
