Fire at high-rise quickly extinguished by firefighters

Everyone is safe following some tense moments at a downtown Winnipeg high-rise building Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.

The City of Winnipeg says in a release that when  Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews arrived they saw smoke and located the fire inside the building.

Firefighters were able to go inside the building and quickly put the fire out. It was declared under control at 2:54 p.m.

Some residents self-evacuated before crews arrived on scene. Firefighters also helped evacuate some residents from their suites, while others were able to shelter in place.

Two people were assessed by paramedics on scene, but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Damage estimates are not available at this time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
