At shortly after 6:45 p.m., Winnipeg Police were called to the 300 block of Larsen Avenue for the report of a residential break-in in progress.

When officers arrived, police said they observed an adult male suspect flee the property. Officers engaged in a short foot pursuit, and members of the Canine Unit assisted officers by tracking the suspect to a yard in the 300 block of Bowman Avenue, where he was arrested without incident. A canister of bear spray repellant and a cellular phone stolen from the residence were found on his person and seized as evidence.

The residents of the home — a 34-year-old woman, a 26-year-old man, and a 16-year-old male — were unharmed during the break-in, police said.

Police said that while in custody, the suspect faked a medical emergency inside the police cruiser. When officers removed him to provide medical assistance, the suspect allegedly assaulted one of them. The officer was not injured.

According to police, the suspect was in possession of another adult male’s identification. He initially lied about his identity, but Forensic Identification Unit Technicians confirmed his true identity through fingerprints.

The 35-year-old has been charged with multiple offences, including break, enter and commit at a dwelling house, assaulting a police officer, possession of a weapon, and identity fraud to avoid arrest and prosecution or obstruct justice. The suspect also had two warrants for his arrest.

He was detained in custody.
