Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to the fire at a two-storey house in the 300 block of Alfred at around 3:11 a.m., and were told that someone may have been trapped inside.

Firefighters promptly entered the house to search for the occupant and successfully removed the individual from the building. The resident was quickly assessed by paramedics and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

As one team of firefighters focused on rescuing the occupant, another crew initiated a fire attack, using hose lines to extinguish the flames. After about an hour, the fire was declared under control.

During the search, firefighters also discovered multiple pets inside the house. Unfortunately, two cats and one dog were found deceased. However, four kittens were safely removed from the home. The City of Winnipeg’s Animal Services Agency was called to care for the surviving animals.

At this time, damage estimates are not available, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
