Fire destroys main kitchen and other nearby structures at Camp Whitney

A fire at Camp Whitney, located just outside Flin Flon, is under control thanks to a person passing by on a jet ski.

On Sunday at around 1:30 p.m., RCMP received a call about a report of significant smoke near the campground.

Officers raced to the scene by boat and found the main kitchen at Camp Whitney was fully engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread to several nearby structures.

A water bomber was sent to the scene to douse the fire. Officers were able to clear the camp and determine that nobody was present.

The Flin Flon Fire Department also attended with water pumps to help extinguish the fire. They were able to contain it to the site. However, the Manitoba Wildfire Service will continue to watch the area to make sure that the fire does not reignite.

RCMP say the site had been rented, but the group left the camp, and it was closed up by a caretaker after they left at around 11:30 a.m.

The RCMP investigation has not found anything suspicious at this time. However, the investigation into the cause is ongoing.
