Police scene tape stretched across multiple properties with visible activity centred around a garage at the rear of a boarded-up house at 274 Selkirk Avenue. Police could be seen clearing items from the outbuilding and entering the property with digging tools.

Cst. Claude Chancy, a Winnipeg Police Service spokesman, said he couldn’t reveal details of what they were searching for or how the building was linked to Harper’s disappearance.

“As far as a search warrant, this is a significant update to an ongoing investigation,” he said, adding that “obviously when you see an IDENT vehicle, there’s a lot of equipment, you can ascertain that there are a lot of factors that are being investigated here …”

Chancy said information obtained by investigators which lead to the search warrant.

He said police do not believe there is any threat to the public and police vehicles will be present “for the foreseeable future.”

An area resident said police arrived at the scene in the morning. She said there’s “always a lot of action” at the boarded-up property being searched and a neighbouring house, where people are known to go to shoot drugs such as down, a fentanyl-based street drug.
