BRAT PACK: Four youths charged after smash-and-grab in West End

Four youths from the ages of 12-14 face charges after a smash-and-grab at a West End business was followed by an intentionally set fire, police said. A nine-year-old was also involved.

At about 1 a.m. Thursday, Winnipeg Police Service responded to an after-hours break-in at a retail store in the 1000 block of Ellice Avenue, where a group of youths smashed the front window to get in, then damaged the store and stole merchandise before fleeing, police said in a news release.

About 30 minutes later, officers responded to a report of a group of teens who started a fire inside a gazebo at the rear of a property in the 1000 block of Sargent Avenue. With help from the K9 unit, they were corralled in the 500 block of Spence Street and taken into custody.

Two 14-year-olds, a 13-year-old, and a 12-year-old male face charges related to commercial break and enter, and arson. They were released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code and turned over to an adult.

A nine-year-old male was referred to the Manitoba Turnabout program which aims to provide support and direction children under 12 need to avoid conflict with the law, according to Manitoba Justice.
