22-year-old charged in connection with death of fellow inmate at Stony Mountain prison

A 22-year-old inmate at a federal prison in Manitoba has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of another inmate earlier this week.

Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, Headingley RCMP were sent to Stony Mountain Institution about a report of a serious assault, according to a news release earlier this week.

When officers arrived at the facility just north of Winnipeg, they found Dean Young seriously injured. He was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries, police said.

The Correctional Service of Canada said at the time of his death, Young had been serving a sentence of eight years, 10 months and 27 days, which began in May 2022, for several offences, including aggravated assault.

The Crown agency said it will review the circumstances surrounding Young’s death.

On Friday, RCMP said in a news release Stony Mountain inmate Nukota Peters, 22, has been charged in connection with Young’s death.

The investigation continues and Peters remains in custody, RCMP said
