Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called federal byelections in two seats, one in Manitoba and one in Quebec.
Races will be first test of government since shocking Toronto seat loss
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday that byelections will be held in two federal ridings on Sept. 16.
Races will be held in LaSalle—Émard—Verdun, a district in Montreal, to fill a seat left vacant by the retirement of former Liberal cabinet minister David Lametti, and in Elmwood—Transcona, to pick a successor for former Manitoba NDP MP Daniel Blaikie, who left federal politics to work with the provincial New Democrat government.
The races will be the first test of the Liberals’ electoral strength since a shocking byelection loss in Toronto–St. Paul’s in June sparked internal consternation in the government.
