On July 22, Headingley RCMP were called to Stony Mountain Institution following a serious assault on an inmate at the prison, Manitoba RCMP said.

When they arrived, RCMP said officers found a 37-year-old male suffering from serious injuries. The inmate was taken to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, where he later died from his injuries.

He was later identified by Correctional Service Canada as Dean Young, who had been serving a sentence of almost nine years for aggravated assault, break and enter and commit, and careless use of a firearm since May 2022. Correctional Service of Canada said a review of the circumstances was being conducted as in all cases involving the death of an inmate.

On Thursday, RCMP Major Crime Services charged Stony Mountain Institution inmate Nukota Peters, 22, with second-degree murder in relation to this homicide. He remains in custody.

In a release Friday, RCMP said the investigation continues.
