New basketball court and playground coming to Northwood Community Centre

The Government of Canada, Province of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, and other project partners broke ground today on major park improvements planned for Northwood Community Centre (1415 Burrows Avenue). The park improvements include an all-new basketball court with sports court surfacing, playground equipment, asphalt pathways, and other features.

Construction of park improvements at Northwood Community Centre is expected to start in the coming weeks and be completed in June 2025.

The project cost is $602,000, with $149,000 funded through the Canada Community-Building Fund, $223,000 from the Land Dedication Reserve Fund, and $230,000 from the Province’s Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund.

“By working with other levels of government and community-minded people, we are able to invest in making our neighbourhoods healthier and stronger,” said Kevin Lamoureux, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “This new basketball court and playground will provide residents with a safe and accessible environment to promote active living.”

“We are proud of our contribution to the revitalization of Northwood Community Centre,” said Glen Simard, Province of Manitoba, Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism. “This investment will provide families with accessible activities, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to enjoy these enhanced facilities while bringing community together.”

“The revitalization of Northwood Community Centre represents our commitment to creating inclusive and engaging spaces for our residents,” said Diljeet Brar, Province of Manitoba, MLA for Burrows. “With contributions from the provincial government, along with federal and municipal partners, this project will bring much-needed upgrades to the park and community centre. We are excited to see the positive changes these improvements will bring to Northwood and the surrounding neighborhoods.”

“I am thrilled to see the renewal of the Northwood Community Centre playground and the construction of a new basketball court finally coming to fruition,” said Vivian Santos, Councillor for Point Douglas and Chairperson for the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “This was a key promise during my 2018 campaign, and I am happy to see our community’s vision being realized. With funding from all three levels of government, it’s great to see us working in partnership for the community. This project reflects our commitment to creating vibrant and inclusive spaces for all residents to enjoy.”

“Winnipeg School Division is excited to support the upgrades to the Northwood Park,” said Lorelei Bunkowsky, Assistant Superintendent of Inclusion Services, Winnipeg School Division. “Northwood Park is a shared greenspace between our families, schools, and businesses. The new changes to the playground, pathways, and lighting will greatly improve the accessibility of the Northwood Park. Additionally, the new basketball court will serve as a recreational hub for many children, youth, families and friends. What a wonderful upgrade for this growing northwest neighbourhood in our city.”

“Community Centres are the hubs for leisure and recreation programs, and these new amenities will be a great addition to Northwood Community Centre,” said Lora Meseman, Executive Director, General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres. “We applaud Councillor Santos and community centre manager Michelle Cooke for working together to make this a reality.”

“I am very excited that Northwood’s community will benefit from Councillor Santos’ vision and commitment to recreation in our area,” said Michelle Cooke, Facility Manager, Northwood Community Centre. “The play structure will provide family fun and the basketball court will ensure youth have a safe space to play. It will be incredibly beneficial for our community. I can’t wait until it opens.”
