‘Cherished son, friend’ dies after hit-and-run on Manitoba highway

A 24-year-old man from India living in Winnipeg has died following a hit-and-run on a Manitoba highway earlier this week.

An online fundraiser identified Harman Singh as the victim of the crash. It said Singh died Thursday after spending several days in intensive care.

Singh was riding a motorcycle along Highway 44 early Monday when police say he was struck from behind by a vehicle that then fled the scene.

Officers located a 30-year-old man asleep behind the wheel of a pickup truck at an address on Henderson Highway in Winnipeg, where he was arrested, RCMP said in a news release earlier this week.

The man faces charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Police have not identified him.

The man was released from custody and is expected in court in November.

Singh had recently obtained permanent residency status to live and work in Canada after coming to Manitoba to pursue an education as an international student, the online fundraiser said.

He was called a “cherished son and friend.”

Only his brother-in-law was able to see Singh in the hospital before he died as his family lives in India, the fundraiser said.

Singh’s family wants his body repatriated to India.
