Two people taken to hospital after fire at three-storey apartment building

Two people were taken to hospital in unstable condition after a fire at a three-storey apartment building on Selkirk Avenue, one of three fires WFPS crews were called to early Monday morning.

Firefighters arrived at the apartment in the 1000 block of Selkirk Avenue at about 6:47 a.m. to find smoke coming from the structure and were told someone was trapped inside their suite, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.
They were able to get the person out of the suite and bring the fire under control at just before 7:15 a.m. Two people were assessed by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital in unstable condition.

Crews also responded to two earlier fires.

At shortly after 4 a.m., crews arrived at a two-storey house in the 400 block of William Newton Avenue in the Elmwood area to find smoke coming from the home. They went inside and launched a fire attack using hose lines and water. The fire was declared under control at around 4:50 a.m. The occupant evacuated before crews arrived and no injuries were reported. It’s believed the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.

And, at 6:27 a.m., crews were sent to a fire in a commercial building in the 1400 block of Main Street. The fire was extinguished at just after 7 a.m., no occupants were found and no injuries were reported.

No damage estimates were available for any of the fires. Causes remain under investigation.
