RCMP officers patrolling the highway about 40 kilometres south of Grand Rapids came across a head-on collision between a SUV and minivan operating as a handivan.

They found a 23-year-old female from Nisichwayasihk Cree Nation, who was the front seat passenger in the SUV, deceased at the scene, RCMP said in a news release. A 42-year-old female passenger in the minivan, from Mosakahiken Cree Nation, died from her injuries at Grand Rapids nursing station.

The 54-year-old minivan driver and another passenger had non-life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers in the SUV and the 23-year-old driver from Nisichwayasihk Cree Nation also had non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. RCMP said they told those waiting it would be a long closure, and many decided to turn around.

When the highway reopened, a northbound SUV that been waiting had a drained battery and wouldn’t start. At about 11:30 p.m., a southbound pickup truck turned around to help, pulling up behind the SUV, RCMP said. The occupants exited the vehicles and were standing roadside.

A northbound van pulling a loaded trailer drove into the back of the pickup, which struck the SUV and caused it to hit two people from the SUV on the roadside. A 33-year-old man from The Pas died on scene, while a 36-year-old man from The Pas had non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues.
