Woman lying on north Winnipeg bridge killed by passing vehicle, police say

A 49-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle on the Harry Lazarenko Bridge early Saturday, police say.

Police were called to the bridge around 1:45 a.m. on a report of a person being seriously injured.

The initial investigation shows the woman was lying on the bridge when she was struck by a westbound vehicle, police said Saturday afternoon.

When paramedics went to tend to her she was already dead, police said. Her family has been notified. Police did not identify her but said she hailed from Winnipeg.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and spoke to investigators, said police.

A damaged car is seen parked on a street, with personal items strewn on the road next to the vehicle.

The bridge, formerly called the Redwood Bridge, was closed for the investigation but has since reopened.

Two others injured in separate collisions

A second person, a male pedestrian, was also struck and injured by a vehicle early Saturday in south Winnipeg.

Around 4 a.m., police say the person was hit on Pembina Highway, between Plaza Drive and Adamar Road.

Police said they were hit by a southbound vehicle and rushed to hospital in critical condition with serious injuries. The driver stayed at the scene and spoke with investigators.

The initial investigation showed that the male was walking east across Pembina Highway when he was struck by a southbound vehicle.

Around 9:45 p.m. Friday, a 57-year-old man was crossing against a red light at Main Street and Smithfield Avenue when he was hit by a southbound vehicle, said police.

Paramedics rushed him to hospital in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle that hit him talked with investigators at the scene, police said.

In all three collisions, investigators are asking anyone with dash cam video or other information about the collision to contact them at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
